What is consciousness about?
I remember holding my breath as I watched this scene from The Matrix. Morpheus was generous enough to offer Neo an actual choice. They both knew Neo’s life was never going to be the same, but only Morpheus could reckon the scope of the change that was about to happen.
Consciousness begins with a question. At a certain moment of your life, you stop for two seconds and ask yourself if you need to do what you are about to do. Suddenly, what we perceived as a pre-established order opens to the possibility of a different sequence, different components, even different criteria to operate.
Consciousness is the habit to make active decisions about your life. It is the key ingredient for change: change is only possible when we are capable of naming that reality which we want to transform.
Consciousness is the sum of three actions:
Maybe you have heard about adopting a curious attitude. You are curious when you observe something as if it was the first time you encounter it.
You have no idea of why it happens, what will happen next, or what will be the result (or if it will be one). It is a game you play with yourself: by pretending you don’t have information about your behavior, you activate your ability to discover what is behind that behavior.
Once you observe yourself with curiosity, you collect information about the ideas, beliefs, assumptions, goals, purposes, or even personal history play a part in how and why you are making certain decisions. You might want to picture Morpheus right here: this is the moment when you decide to own this information and becoming responsible for having it.
What do you do when you suddenly understand that it is you who shapes your reality? After taking a couple of deep breaths, you might want to practice stating an intention and committing to behave according to it.
Remember, we are talking about habits here: habits need repetition, repetition improves implementation, success reinforces motivation. Rinse and repeat until it becomes inevitable, a part of your regular self.
Consciousness is the real name of control. You cannot control what happens, even how it happens: but you can control how you react to reality and what you want it to mean to you.
